They obviously read the forums, so they obviously know everyones concerns. It looks as though it has source code added over several years, but no one has really ever taken the time to clean it up like it should have been. ![]() So I was looking at Understand for CC, and downloaded a copy for evaluation last night. They give you 15 days before you have to license it, so I have some time. But I was just wondering whether or not anyone uses this with AVR development at all. I looked at it a few years ago when it was under 500 for the license, but its about 1000 for a single seat now. But one could argue that it will save that much in hours spent trying to document the code for this project; and thats not even starting to touch on all the other benefits of the product. In just using for an hour or so last night, it seems to be a tremendous product. It would seem to be worth the money for a project like I am on now--especially since the code may need a fairly significant re-write in some areas. I also see that it now supports C, which is the language of choice for another project that Im being ask to help out on whenever possible. Previously Ive used Source Insight which I think I prefer (though this may just be familiarity). When using Linux system I use the NG version of the red hat source navigator and thats actually pretty good considering the price you pay;-). These tools are aimed more at the kind of project where you have 10,000. Things like the Linux kernel and so on where no one person can know the layout of everything. In a 20 file AVR project Id imagine itd be pretty easy to have a read through and just keep a picture of the overall structure in your head in fact. Ive found that AS5.1 works well; and since (I presume) its using the same avr-gcc that AS4 is using, I really cant see what the problem would be. Ive read the stuff about compiler optimizations, etc., but havent found it to be much of a problem yet. And Ill bet more and more people will be moving to 5.1 now that its out. In all likelihood, this projects code will evolve over the next 6-8 months anyway, before it has to be mission critical. So if there are still bugs in AS5.1, then Ill bet they are mostly squashed by then. If the cost was 500, I would probably have already purchased it, as I have seen it several times before. But I just dont know if I can justify 1000 right now--especially when I am just getting started on the project. Maybe in a few months when the re-writes start, and the money has been coming in for a couple months. But right now Ive just formed a small company and the finances are a bit tight--and there may well be other things that I can better direct 1000 towards. Also Eric has promised to independently make a new WinAVR release though thats waiting for the dust to settle on 4.7.x and AVR-LibC 1.8.x. However what I find very interesting is that Atmel, the manufacturer of a line of microncontrollers, is pushing AS5 now.
